Sloes are the king of the hedgerow, for the simple reason that they are used to make sloe gin. That wondrous dark red liquid that really warms the cockles on a cold winter’s day…well, any day actually. Best in the late autumn, this year they were out early due to the peculiar weather and we were able to pick a large crop in mid October and after freezing (to simulate the frost and increase the sweetness) we laid down some for drinking in the spring. This has been named the ‘Vaccine batch’ as the idea is not to drink it till after the lockdown when the vaccine hopefully starts to ease off the restrictions.
